Showcasing rare and unique Latin American films in London and beyond.

Salome, Salome, Salome

Three radically different queer incarnations of the biblical princess across Brazil, Mexico and the UK.

The figure of Salome has crossed millennia as the femme fatale par excellence. She has inspired countless interpretations (Oscar Wilde’s Salome from the late 19th century being the most influential) and has become an icon of independence and sexual freedom, embodying empowerment and erotic rebellion. Since Alla Nazimova and Charles Bryant’s 1922 film, queer elements have unfolded in diverse ways across many cinematic adaptations of the myth.

Salome, Salome, Salome opens with the UK premiere of André Antônio’s unashamed sci-fi melodrama and camp rom-com Salome. Followed by Salome’s Last Dance by British enfant terrible Ken Russell, a delirious and delicious re-enactment of Wilde’s forbidden play. It concludes with the Paris-based Mexican artist Teo Hernández’s dreamlike Salome of textures, sensations and veils.

Diva, spectre, maneater: from one film to the next, from baroque excess to underground experimentation, Salome multiplies herself, tracing connections across times, continents and narrative styles, always hypnotic and transgressive.

Cinema Mentiré was founded in London in 2023 out of a need to showcase real and underrepresented Latin American voices in both contemporary and classical cinema. It aims to challenge the stereotypes and conventions associated with the region by screening independent films, many of which have never been shown in the UK.

The initiative has organised screenings at various cinemas and alternative venues across London and beyond, including Ciné Lumière, Curzon, ICA, Rio Cinema, The Cinema Museum, The Garden Cinema and Watershed. It has also collaborated with institutions, film festivals, and independent collectives such as V&A East, QUEERCIRCLE, London Short Film Festival, Cinema Rediscovered, Fringe! Queer Film & Arts Fest, Budapest Classics Film Marathon, Cine Brazil, and Romancero Books, among others.
